Microsoft launches new logo after 25 years

Microsoft will use a new logo for the first time in over two and a half decades. The software titan has created a new logo which has been heavily inspired by the emblem of Windows operating system. This change in the logo also shows the company's focus on the tile-centric Metro interface, which it uses in the Windows Phone platform, XBOX 360 and the upcomingWindows 8 and Office suite.

On the Microsoft Blog on TechNet, Jeff Hansen, the general manager of brand strategy at the company, said that this step will ensure that a consistent user experience can be delivered across all platforms, from PCs and phones to tablets and television.

Rather than the previous emblem, which only had the name of the company, this new logo has 'Microsoft' written in Segoe font on the right and square with four tiles, reminiscent of the Metro UI, on the left.

The new Microsoft logo is already on the company website and in retail stores in Boston, Seattle and Bellevue. It will be seen heavily in advertisements as well as intra-organisation communications.

Twitter announces new restrictions for developers

Twitter announces new restrictions for developers

San Francisco: Twitter, on Thursday announced new rules for software developers restricting them from creating Twitter apps.

The new rules let users log in through officially sanctioned authentic Twitter programs while limiting the access to Twitter services by third-party clients.

Under its new rules, independent software developers who create new Twitter apps will only be allowed to have a maximum of 100,000 users. Existing apps with more than 100,000 users can double their user base before Twitter imposes a hard cap on user base.

Twitter believes it can provide more interactive content -- and better serve ads and measure their performance -- if the vast majority of its users use officially sanctioned programs to log into Twitter. But that approach has riled many software developers as well as users, many of whom favor independent clients like Hootsuite, Uber and Tweetbot over Twitter's own products.

The new guidelines, which were published on Twitter's blog on Thursday, attracted a torrent of criticism from "power-users" and software developers.

Google+ Launches Vanity URL Feature for Select Users

Google+ Launches Vanity URL Feature for Select Users

Google is ready to host Vanity URLs (custom URL feature) for Google Plus users, well almost. Saurabh Sharma, a Product Manager at Google made the announcement Monday afternoon, in an official Google blog post.

Initially, the vanity URLs will be offered arbitrarily to a select few – mostly celebrities, brands and companies. Currently, a standard Google+ URL for a user, looks something like this: http://plus.google.com/123456789060894565657/ (example).

The first few to get the custom URLs include, but not limited to, Brittany Spears, David Beckham, Hugo Boss, Toyota, and so on. So now the Dell custom URL could read like, google.com/+dell. Google’s own URL is google.com/+google.

Google will later cover verified ‘commoners’ too. Facebook and MySpace also provide users with custom URLs.

Earlier, Google converted cartoonist Matthew Inman’s “The Oatmeal” profile , in a lighter vein, into a custom URL, reading something like, http://plus.google.com/blergasdf1234thimbleturdorgasm99meatpoopypoopxv9donkeypie.

The major benefit of having a custom URL is that people can easily search for an individual, a company or a brand. It is in fact much easier to remember a vanity address than 10-12 numbers. Also, the word ‘plus’ is not required anymore to search for someone on Google. Just type, google.com/+name and you’ll find the person on top of the search result.

Saurabh Sharma, a Product Manager for Google+, posted the following to the Official Google+ Page:

“Today we’re introducing custom URLs to make it even easier for people to find your profile on Google+. A custom URL is a short, easy to remember web address that links directly to your profile or page on Google+. For instance, +TOYOTA can now use google.com/+toyota to unveil their latest models, +Britney Spears can share her upcoming appearances at google.com/+britneyspears, +Ubisoft can share game trailers and videos at google.com/+assassinscreed, and +Delta can help travelers find great deals at google.com/+delta.”
